Loading the calculator…

Read resistor codes and explore wiper position, taper and output loading.

Position runs from terminal a toward b; c is the wiper. The logarithmic teaching model has 10% of total resistance between a and c at 50% travel. A/B markings vary by manufacturer: check the datasheet. A connected load changes the output voltage.

How to use

  1. Enter a three-digit code such as 103, or clear it to enter resistance directly.
  2. Set the position, taper, supply voltage and optional load.
  3. Read a–c, c–b and output voltage; open the simulator and move the wiper.

Circuit model

Vout = Vin × (Rcb ∥ RL)/(Rac + (Rcb ∥ RL)); Rac + Rcb = R.

Frequently asked questions

Does A always mean a logarithmic potentiometer?

ExercisesExercises: PotentiometersSplit the total resistance into a–c and c–b. For a linear taper, a–c equals total resistance times position. Put a load in parallel with c–b before calculating the divider output. For the logarithmic example, 50% travel gives 10% resistance a–c. Select P1 to move its wiper and read the output voltage.
