Design a low-pass or high-pass RC filter and explore its frequency response.

The response assumes an unloaded, first-order RC filter. Input and output voltages are peak amplitudes. At the cutoff, amplitude is about 70.7% of the input, not half. The simulator also shows the transient response.

How to use

  1. Choose low-pass or high-pass and select the unknown value.
  2. Enter R in ohms and C in microfarads, or the desired cutoff frequency.
  3. Compare gain and phase, then open the circuit and probe G1 and V1.

Circuit model

fc = 1/(2πRC); τ = RC; |HLP| = 1/√(1 + (f/fc)²); |HHP| = (f/fc)/√(1 + (f/fc)²).

Frequently asked questions

What happens at an RC filter cutoff?

The response assumes an unloaded, first-order RC filter. Input and output voltages are peak amplitudes. At the cutoff, amplitude is about 70.7% of the input, not half. The simulator also shows the transient response.

How to use?

Choose low-pass or high-pass and select the unknown value. Enter R in ohms and C in microfarads, or the desired cutoff frequency. Compare gain and phase, then open the circuit and probe G1 and V1.

ExercisesExercises: RC filtersUse fc = 1/(2πRC), with R in ohms and C in farads. For output amplitude, use the low-pass or high-pass gain at G1 frequency and multiply by the input peak voltage. Open the circuit inspector to read the RC analysis; probe G1 and V1 to compare waveforms after the transient.
